For the dinner table

Today’s khutbah explained that the maqasid of Sharia are Islam’s higher purposes, and that Sharia is more than a list of laws: it is the ethics and spirit of Islam. The five major objectives named were preserving life, religion, the intellect, wealth, and the family. These objectives help Muslims respond wisely to new questions, while fixed acts of worship remain fixed. The speaker urged us to understand both the how and the why of our religion and to learn from teachers who understand today’s realities. Families were also encouraged to help children love, memorize, and understand the Qur’an.

  1. Which of the five objectives can we practice most clearly at home this week?
  2. How can we learn the reasons behind a teaching instead of only memorizing the rule?
  3. What Islamic values should stay with us even as the world changes?
