Follow the Companions' way for guidance
Because Allah praised the Companions in the Quran and made their path the criterion of guidance, Muslims must revere them, follow their way, learn and spread their virtues, and defend their honor against those who revile them.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Opening praise and the khutbah al-hajah, then citation of Surah at-Tawbah 9:100 praising the Muhajirun and Ansar
- Allah made belief and worship acceptable only when it matches the way of the Companions (Q2:137, Q4:115)
- Prophetic narrations establishing the Companions as the best of creation after the Prophet and transmitters of the religion
- Q48:18 and Ibn Kathir on Allah's pleasure with the believers at the pledge under the tree
- 'Best of generations is my generation' and the command to hold to the Sunnah and the way of the rightly-guided caliphs
- Ibn Mas'ud on following those who have passed away, since the living are not safe from fitnah
- The 73-sects hadith: the saved sect is 'what I and my companions are upon today'
- Second part: the ummah's rectification comes only through the Companions' way (Imam Malik); condemnation of those who curse the Companions and Aisha; call to learn, spread, and defend their virtues
In the khateeb's words
“companions of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam how many of us sitting here today can mention the”
“that my ummah is going to divide into 73 different groups”
“is by following the way of the companions of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam”
“and anyone who curses anyone who reviles anyone who berates the companions of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah was about the special status of the Prophet's companions, the Sahabah. The speaker reminded us that Allah praised them in the Qur'an and chose them to carry Islam to us, so loving and respecting them is part of loving Allah and His Messenger. He warned against following paths that stray from their example and encouraged us to learn their stories, defend their honor, and take them as role models. When we hold on to the Quran and Sunnah as they understood it, we stay on the path that pleases Allah and brings strength to our lives.
- What is one way we can follow the example of the Sahabah in our family this week?
- How should we respond if we hear someone saying something unfair about the Prophet's companions?
