Follow Allah’s guidance instead of making rules
“Allah gave us these eyes and these ears and this chest to see the truth and to follow it.”
The khutbah argues that believers must receive halal and tayyib guidance from Allah rather than inventing religious rules, and must use their hearing, sight, and understanding to follow truth and seek the Hereafter.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces Allah’s command to consume what is halal and tayyib and avoid Satan’s footsteps.
- Warns against inventing dietary laws or speaking about Allah without knowledge.
- Explains how people may be worldly intelligent yet refuse to understand revelation.
- Connects hearing, sight, understanding, and gratitude with recognizing and following truth.
- Applies the teaching to believers’ food, gratitude, and revealed exceptions.
- Closes with prayers for guidance, the Hereafter, and suffering communities, followed by Qur’anic recitation.
In the khateeb's words
“the halal and tayyib Allah Azza wa Jal already told us what it is therefore there is no reason to make it up”
“that same brain when it came down to follow what Allah revealed they no longer understood”
“Allah gave us these eyes and these ears and this chest to see the truth and to follow it”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that guidance comes from Allah and that we should eat what is halal and tayyib, permissible and pure, rather than inventing religious rules. It warned that people can be clever in worldly matters yet refuse to understand revelation when it challenges their habits. Allah gave us hearing, sight, and understanding so we can recognize truth, follow it, and show gratitude. It closed with a prayer for people suffering in the places named in the sermon and around the world.
- What is one way we can check whether something is truly good before following it?
- How can we use our eyes, ears, and minds to notice truth this week?
- Who could we remember in our dua when people are suffering?
