Love the Prophet through obedience
“One should always compare themselves with the best.”
The khutbah teaches that sincere obedience to Allah and His Messenger, modeled by the Companions, turns love for the Prophet into a path toward companionship with him in Paradise.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Frames Muslim life as a journey toward meeting Allah rather than pursuing only worldly ambitions.
- Contrasts material wishes with the Companions’ aspiration to accompany the Prophet in Paradise.
- Uses Thauban’s fear of separation from the Prophet to introduce the promise of Qur'an 4:69.
- Illustrates obedience through the Companions’ immediate abandonment of intoxicants after prohibition.
- Uses the gold-ring story to show that love for the Prophet must be proven through action.
In the khateeb's words
“So to align one's compass, one should always compare themselves with the best. And who is better than the companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, the students of the noble prophetic school?”
“It is a divine promise. that will not be broken a promise from the one whose word does not change and whose pledge does not alter.”
“So, immediately after the verse was revealed, they said, "We are finished, we are finished." They heard the call, they said, "We are finished, we are finished."”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah teaches that a Muslim’s hopes should reach beyond material success toward meeting Allah and being close to the Prophet in Paradise. It tells the story of Thauban, who feared being separated from the Prophet in the Hereafter, and points to Qur'an 4:69 as a promise for those who obey Allah and His Messenger. The Companions showed this obedience by responding immediately when intoxicants were prohibited and by giving up a gold ring when the Prophet instructed it. The reminder for us is that love is more than words: we show it through sincere choices, following guidance, and leaving what Allah has forbidden.
- What is one hope you have that is more important than money or possessions?
- What is one good action that could show love for the Prophet?
- Why can obeying quickly be difficult, and how can we make it easier?
