The Prophet's four ways of thinking

“After faith, the greatest gift that one could attain is al-aql, intellect.”

The khateeb, at 6:04

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Opening praise and call to taqwa; al-aql as the greatest gift after iman
  2. Point 1: constructive contemplative thinking, the Prophet's reflection in Hira, the palm-tree parable puzzle
  3. Point 2: balanced thinking weighing harm vs. benefit, the Bedouin urinating in the masjid; sparing Abdullah ibn Ubayy for the sake of da'wah
  4. Point 3: optimistic thinking with trust in Allah while taking practical means, the hijra cave and the precautions taken
  5. Point 4: consultation (shura), the Prophet accepting companions' opinions at Badr and the Trench
  6. Application: five elements for sound thinking, purify the heart, restrain the tongue, take daily alone time to think, and keep company of sound advisors
  7. Closing dua, salawat, and iqamah/prayer
Try this week
Purify your heart before thinking through a decision so desires do not steer you wrong
Restrain your tongue from gossip and backbiting so your thinking is not corrupted
Set aside 5-15 minutes (up to an hour) daily away from phone/TV to think through your affairs alone
Keep company with people who give sound advice and consult them before decisions
When angry or pressured, pause and weigh which response produces the greater good rather than reacting
Take all practical means (al-akhz bil asbab) while maintaining complete trust in Allah
Consult household members rather than acting as your own dictator at home
Sources the khateeb cited
Quran 34:46Command to stand individually or in small groups and contemplate, used to argue that individual reflection leads to truth
Sahih al-BukhariThe Prophet gave companions a 'puzzle' to show iman requires continuous contemplation, not rigidity
Sahih al-BukhariBasis for the second point: balanced thinking that seeks the greater good without making things difficult
Sahih al-BukhariExample of weighing harm vs. benefit, scaring the man would spread the filth and harm him
Quran 9:40Example of the Prophet's complete positive trust in Allah during the hijra
Quran 3:159Allah's command to consult, basis for the fourth point on shura

For the dinner table

Today's khutbah reminded us that after faith itself, the greatest gift Allah gives us is our intellect, the ability to think, reflect, and choose wisely. The Prophet Muhammad showed us how to use that gift: he contemplated Allah's creation, chose the easier halal path when it brought greater good, stayed hopeful and trusted Allah while still taking practical steps, and asked others for advice instead of insisting on his own way. The khateeb encouraged us to purify our hearts, guard our tongues from gossip, set aside quiet time away from phones and screens, and keep company with people who give sound advice. When we practice this kind of thinking, we face problems with more calm, wisdom, and trust in Allah.

  1. When do you feel closest to Allah while thinking about the world around you?
  2. Can you think of a time when taking a deep breath and choosing the kinder option made things better?
  3. Who is someone you trust to give you good advice?
