Taqwa shapes every choice and character
“Follow bad deed with good deed so the good deed will wipe out the bad deed and treat people kindly.”
Taqwa means obeying Allah knowingly wherever we are while cultivating good character through kind speech, self-control, humility, Quran, and the Prophet’s example.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- The gift of life should be used for good deeds, even small ones.
- The hadith on taqwa calls for fearing Allah, following bad deeds with good deeds, and treating people kindly.
- Taqwa means being where Allah wants us, acting with knowledge, seeking reward, and fearing punishment.
- Humility and self-accountability prevent believers from considering themselves better than others.
- Good character includes beautiful speech, anger control, cheerfulness, and being part of the solution.
- Character improves through Quran, studying the Prophet’s life, and learning from both good and difficult examples.
- Taqwa is both an effort and a result of worship that illuminates the heart.
In the khateeb's words
“This is a gift from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala that we should use to our advantage and do something that will make a difference in this life”
“Fear Allah whenever and whenever you are wherever you are and follow bad deed with good deed so the good deed will wipe out the bad deed and treat people kindly”
“we can always be part of the solution and not part of the problem”
For the dinner table
Allah has given us life as a gift, so we should use it for good deeds, even small ones. Taqwa means remembering Allah wherever we are, doing what He asks with knowledge and hope, and leaving what He forbids. It also means not thinking we are better than other people and holding ourselves accountable. Good character shows up in beautiful words, controlling anger, being cheerful, and helping solve problems. We can grow through the Quran, learning the Prophet’s life, and practicing these habits with our families.
- What is one small good deed you can do today?
- How can we use kinder words when we feel angry?
- What can we learn from the Prophet’s life this week?
