Hope and action can carry us through disappointment
“Either He will facilitate exactly what you are looking for, or He will give you something better; either way, you are in a win-win situation.”
Disappointment is part of life, but believers can navigate it by remembering past blessings, expecting ease, fulfilling responsibilities, worshipping Allah, maintaining hope, and relieving others’ hardships.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Uses the Prophet’s losses, persecution, and community suffering to frame disappointment as part of life.
- Presents Surah al-Sharh as a guide to remember past blessings instead of magnifying negatives.
- Explains that ease accompanies difficulty through examples from Syria and Prophet Yusuf.
- Urges listeners to act, fulfill responsibilities, avoid isolation, and contribute positively.
- Encourages night worship, heartfelt dua, and sincere hope in Allah’s mercy and better outcome.
- Applies the message communally by encouraging relief for others through Udhiya/Qurbani and support for Sudan.
In the khateeb's words
“don't sit there and just think to yourself how difficult your life is stand up and go and give the da'wah”
“go home stand up and worship Allah and when you get down into sujood speak to Allah in whatever language you know”
“either He will facilitate exactly what you are looking for or He will give you something better either way you are in a win-win situation”
For the dinner table
Sheikh Tarik reminded us that the Prophet endured deep loss and hardship, and his example can guide us through our own disappointments. Drawing on Surat al-Sharh, he encouraged us to remember Allah’s past blessings and notice the support and ease that come alongside difficulty. He urged us to keep fulfilling our responsibilities and doing useful things when we feel stuck. We can turn to Allah in worship and speak from the heart in dua, sharing our sadness, frustrations, and hopes. He also reminded us to bring relief to others as we ask Allah for relief ourselves, including helping people in need celebrate Eid.
- What blessing can you remember today that gives you hope when something is hard?
- What would you like to share with Allah in your own words tonight?
- Who could we help this week, and what could we do together?
