Ramadan can transform a believer
“Let's put on different lenses when we're reading the same ayat this year.”
Ramadan can transform a believer through fasting, prayer, Laylat al-Qadr, and deeper Quran contemplation using different interpretive lenses.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- The story of Talha ibn Ubaydillah and two companions shows the immense value of one additional Ramadan and year of prayer.
- Hadith about fasting, qiyam, and Laylat al-Qadr promises forgiveness for worship performed with faith and hope in Allah’s reward.
- The Quraib and Ibn Abbas report illustrates differing moon-sighting dates among Muslim communities.
- A lesson from Dr. Iyad Al-Qunaybi introduces reading Quran verses through multiple lenses.
- The khateeb applies Quranic passages to present moral darkness and closes with supplications for steadfastness and reaching Ramadan.
In the khateeb's words
“the difference between them and Jannah is like the difference between earth and the heavens why? because of one more Ramadan and one year worth of prayer”
“let's put on different lenses when we're reading the same ayat this year”
“I want everyone to start thinking about how to contemplate on the Quran in a different way this year.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that another Ramadan and another year of prayer are precious gifts from Allah. He encouraged us to fast and pray with faith in Allah and hope in His reward, and reminded us of the opportunity for forgiveness on Laylatul Qadr. He also shared an account of Muslims beginning their fast on different days and invited us to think about it carefully. He encouraged us to slow down when reading the Quran and consider how its verses speak to the experiences and concerns we bring to them. Through these reflections, he emphasized gratitude for Allah’s guidance and the Prophet’s care for his community. He closed by asking Allah to help us reach Ramadan, remain steadfast, and make an effort in prayer, good deeds, and thoughtful Quran reading.
- What is one everyday act of worship you want to appreciate more after hearing about the value of another year of prayer?
- What does hoping for Allah’s reward mean to you when something good feels difficult?
- Which familiar Quranic verse would you like us to read and think about together?
