Parents must anchor children in faith
“Kids who grew up in mosques tend to have a better outcome.”
In one sentence
Because children growing up in the West are immersed in secular culture that erodes their faith, parents must use the summer break to anchor them in salah, the masjid, the Quran, and a merciful, just Muslim home.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Opening: family and children are the most valuable thing after the deen; summer break is an opportunity
- The threat: secularism in Western schools teaches that belief in God is backward; even Middle East culture is overpowered
- Solution one: establish salah in the home, teach wudu and the meaning of prayer, never abandon salah even when sinning
- Solution two: attach children to the masjid, as the Prophet first built the masjid in Medina as the community's hub
- Solution three: teach the Quran so children love it, even in English; cautionary story of the neighbor who died rejecting Quran
- Second half: treat all children equally, hadith of al-Bashir ibn Nu'man, and the jealousy of Yusuf's brothers as a warning
- Close: dua for a brother's daughter with cancer, then prayer recitation
Try this week
Use the summer break to teach children about Allah and the Prophet and bring them closer to the deen
Establish salah in the home: wake children for prayer and personally show them how to make proper wudu
Teach children the pillars and sunan of prayer and that Allah interacts with them during recitation
Bring children to the mosque for salah, lessons, and activities; volunteer them so the masjid feels like theirs
Teach children the Quran's meaning, even in English, and let them fall asleep listening to recitation
Stop fighting, screaming, and threatening divorce in front of children; show unconditional love and never kick a child out of the house
Treat all children equally in gifts and outward affection; never joke about or display favoritism
Make dua for a brother's daughter who has cancer
