Allah's mercy is greater than our sins
“Allah's mercy is greater than your sins.”
Because Allah's mercy is greater than our sins and surrounds every blessing, believers should never despair, should turn to Allah with hopeful trust, and should show mercy and forgiveness to others.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Welcomes Carol into Islam through shahadah and presents conversion as a clean slate and new family.
- Prays for sick community members and for a deceased relative.
- Warns against despair and grounds hope in the Qur'an's command not to lose Allah's mercy.
- Uses hadith stories about forgiveness, closeness to Allah, and the vastness of divine mercy.
- Highlights everyday blessings, urges reliance on Allah over people, and calls listeners to show mercy and forgive.
- Closes with five supplications for mercy and communal prayers before Salah.
In the khateeb's words
“no matter how sinful we become no matter how much we live in disobedience a person should never lose their hope and never fall into the state of disparity”
“Allah is more forgiving than people human beings hold grudges yet Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala welcomes our tawbah in our repentance every single time we return to Him”
“Allah's mercy is greater than your sins. Take one step to Allah and Allah will come your way by two steps.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah began by welcoming a new Muslim and reminding us that turning to Allah is a fresh start. It reminded us that sins should not make us despair, because Allah's mercy is greater than our mistakes and He welcomes sincere return. Allah's mercy appears in everyday blessings such as health, sight, hearing, guidance, and the chance to repent. We should trust Allah, ask Him with hope, and show mercy to people by respecting their rights and forgiving even when we cannot forget. The khateeb also shared five du'as asking Allah for mercy in this life and the next.
- What blessing do you notice today that you usually take for granted?
- When is forgiving someone difficult, and what might make it easier for Allah's sake?
- Which du'a for mercy would you like to learn together?
