Spiritual progress means letting go
“The metric through which Allah has defined progress is not by what we add in our life.”
In one sentence
True spiritual progress is measured not by what we add to life, but by what we willingly let go of for Allah.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Worldly progress is usually measured by increased wealth, business, education, or possessions.
- Believers should instead measure growth by leaving sins, attachments, and comforts for Allah.
- The Prophet's migration, the stories of Musa and Ibrahim, and Gaza illustrate sacrifice and trust.
- Listeners are urged to release grudges, habits, harmful relationships, and damaging speech.
- The bankrupt-person hadith warns that backbiting, slander, and lies can erase one's rewards.
Try this week
Choose one habit, app, friend, permissible comfort, or way of speaking to leave for Allah.
Release grudges and arguments within the family for Allah's sake.
Read a hadith book with the family instead of spending that time on another activity.
Ask whether a decision follows Allah's command, not only whether it benefits career or worldly life.
Avoid backbiting, slander, and lies that can consume one's rewards.

Quotes
In the khateeb's words
“As parents, let it go of aspects that may cause the decay of the iman of our children. Because they're watching what we do.”
“When leaving aspects, the moment you leave something for Allah, Allah brings His love into our home.”
“The metric through which Allah has defined progress is not by what we add in our life. It's by what we can let go of in our life.”
Talk about it at home
For the dinner table
The khutbah says we usually measure progress by what we gain, money, degrees, or possessions. For a believer, real growth also means leaving behind sins, grudges, harmful habits, and comforts when Allah asks us to. The stories of migration, Musa, and Ibrahim's family show that trusting Allah through sacrifice can lead to something better and bring love into the home. We should choose one thing to release, guard our speech, and let children see faith in our actions.
- What is one thing you could let go of for Allah this week?
- How can our family show faith through what we do, not just what we say?
- Why can holding a grudge hurt our spiritual progress?
