True leadership must be appointed by God
“I will appoint you as an imam to the human being.”
True religious leadership is divinely appointed for the just, and genuine loyalty to the Ahlul Bayt must be shown through obedience, worship, and faithful conduct.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces Ibrahim's tests and his Quranic appointment as imam.
- Explains imamate as divinely appointed leadership reserved for those free of injustice.
- Contrasts Shia imamate with shura, elections, and early caliphate history.
- Uses Hadith al-Thaqalayn to emphasize holding to the Quran and Ahlul Bayt.
- Recounts Imam Hasan al-Askari's life in Samarra and Abbasid pressures.
- Defines genuine Shi'a identity through obedience, worship, and loyalty to the Ahlul Bayt.
In the khateeb's words
“we try as a follower of ahlul bayt we have to try to follow as much as we can some of their wisdom”
For the dinner table
Today the khateeb spoke about Prophet Ibrahim and the difficult tests he faced before Allah appointed him as an imam to guide people. He emphasized that this responsibility requires freedom from injustice and explained the Shia belief that Allah appoints the Imams. He also remembered Imam Hasan al-Askari and encouraged us to learn from the wisdom and way of life of the Ahlul Bayt. He reminded us that calling ourselves their followers or attending gatherings during Muharram is only part of the picture. Our love should show throughout the year through obedience to Allah, sincere effort in worship, and following those close to Him.
- What is one way you can practice fairness when you get to make a decision for others?
- What small act of worship could we help each other keep doing throughout the year?
- How can we put something we learn about the Ahlul Bayt into practice tomorrow?
