Heedlessness pulls believers off the right path
“Allah covered you, you need to cover yourself.”
Heedlessness (ghafla) toward Allah's signs is a widespread spiritual disease whose signs, causes, and cures every believer must know in order to wake up and stay on the right path.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Ghafla is a trait of the people of Hellfire and afflicts the majority of people (Surah Yunus)
- Five signs of ghafla: laziness in worship, excusing haram, publicizing sins, wasting time on screens, acting without pure intention
- Causes: ignorance of Allah's names and attributes, sins without remorse or tawbah, following desires and heedless company
- Cure: grow in knowledge of Allah and aqeedah, and fill daily routines with dhikr
- Self-accountability method: three astaghfirullah after each prayer as a check-and-balance benchmark
- Closing supplications for forgiveness and protection from heedlessness
In the khateeb's words
“Wallah, if you will be at the company, and they say, if you stay another 20 minutes, we will give you $100. You'll stay. Simple. You'll stay.”
“When you steal from your prayer, that's a sin. Like you steal it from it.”
“Allah covered you, you need to cover yourself not to go into that.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah warns us about ghafla, or becoming heedless of Allah and His signs. It describes signs of ghafla such as laziness in worship, making excuses for wrong actions, publicizing sins, wasting time, and acting without sincere intention. We can fight ghafla by learning more about Allah, remembering Him throughout the day, repenting sincerely, and choosing good company. The khateeb also encouraged us to review the quality of our prayers and use the three post-prayer istighfars as a moment for self-correction. Small, steady efforts can help keep our hearts awake and connected to Allah.
- What is one good deed you could add to your day this week?
- What helps you put your phone or games away when they take too much of your time?
- How can we remind each other about prayer in a kind and helpful way?
