Knowledge should serve worship and service
“The center and the core of our life should be to serve and please Allah.”
Knowledge should be pursued as beneficial knowledge aligned with humanity’s purpose of worshiping and serving Allah, rather than treated as an end in itself, and must be sought with effort and discernment amid information overload.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Uses Surah az-Zumar 39:9 and the graduation season to ask what knowledge is for.
- Warns that social media, AI, and constant information can spread confusion and fabricated religious content.
- Distinguishes life goals such as degrees, jobs, marriage, and business from humanity’s ultimate purpose.
- Explains that humans were created to worship Allah and serve humanity, while misaligned goals produce emptiness and restlessness.
- Emphasizes that fulfilling one’s purpose requires sustained effort alongside tawakkul and resisting Shaytan’s distractions.
- Closes by asking Allah for beneficial knowledge and relief for oppressed communities before the prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“Getting married is a purpose. Starting a business is a purpose. Whereas all of these things are not the purpose of life. They're just goals.”
“Therefore, we have to understand that if knowledge is not beneficial, ilm al-nafi'ah, and is not aligned with a purpose, then it serves us no good and no benefit.”
“that everything that we do, the center and the core of our life should be to serve and please Allah .”
“You have to start getting comfortable with the uncomfortable. You have to start putting in hard work and dedication no matter what it takes.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that knowledge should bring clarity, good character, and purposeful living, not merely degrees or jobs. It warned that social media, AI, and constant information can confuse us, so we should seek beneficial knowledge and verify what we receive. Our deepest purpose is to worship and please Allah and to serve humanity; education, work, marriage, and other goals should support that purpose. Fulfilling it requires steady effort alongside tawakkul, not passive reliance, and patience through discomfort.
- What is one goal you have, and how could it serve a bigger purpose?
- How can we tell whether something online is useful or just making us restless?
- What is one hard but meaningful thing you can keep working on this week?
