Reason must serve Allah's commands
“You have to think according to what Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has sent.”
Allah has provided complete guidance for life, and Muslims should submit to His commands while using reason and effort to follow Islam and the Sunnah.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Allah created the world with human necessities and provided complete guidance for life.
- Correct thinking matters because thoughts and decisions are accountable before Allah.
- Divine commands, including worship and excellent treatment of parents, are not open to debate.
- Human reasoning should serve Allah's commands through practical effort and cause-and-effect action.
- Following Islam and the Sunnah is presented as the path toward Jannah.
- The khutbah contrasts divine sovereignty with democracy, secularism, and other human systems.
- The sermon closes with prayer and dua for a member's deceased granddaughter.
In the khateeb's words
“Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has the complete instructions of life and He mentions that in surah al-shura.”
“You have to think according to what Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has sent.”
“What Allah does, Allah worry about it. What you do is what Allah has instructed you.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that Allah provides what we need for life and gives us guidance for how to live. He urged us to use our intelligence to put Allah’s commands into practice. He compared this to becoming a doctor: wanting something is only a beginning, and we must follow through with work and preparation. He also reminded us that human judgment is limited and that Allah will review all decisions, encouraging us not to despair. He spoke warmly about the good in those who come to Jumu'ah to listen to the Quran and encouraged them to live by its guidance.
- What is one good intention you could turn into an action this week?
- Like a student preparing to become a doctor, what could you practice regularly to grow in your faith?
- What reminder from Jumu'ah would you like our family to put into practice together?
