Carry Ramadan's taqwa beyond Eid
“You have freedom of choice, but once you make that choice, you have to live through whatever consequences come along with that choice.”
Ramadan is training for taqwa, and Muslims must carry that God-consciousness into the remaining eleven months through sincere worship, disciplined prayer, truthful speech, good character, and awareness that Allah is always watching.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Defines taqwa through fear of Allah, obedience to revelation, contentment, preparation for death, and navigating obstacles.
- Reframes Ramadan as preseason or basic training rather than the finish line at Eid.
- Connects ihsan with worshipping as though seeing Allah and remembering that Allah sees one's actions.
- Explains that professing la ilaha illallah entails obedience to Allah throughout one's entire life.
- Urges listeners to read and understand the Qur'an, align speech with actions, and seek accepted worship.
- Gives practical guidance on praying on time, attending the masjid, waking for Fajr and suhur, and making du'a.
- Closes by asking Allah to make the congregation among the muttaqun and accept their worship.
In the khateeb's words
“the month of Ramadan is the month in which we attain and achieve and acquire this taqwa”
“Listen, our lives, a Muslim's life, is supposed to revolve around the salat.”
“You have freedom of choice, but once you make that choice, you have to live through whatever consequences come along with that choice.”
For the dinner table
Ramadan is not the finish line; it is training that teaches us taqwa, or mindful awareness of Allah. The khateeb reminded us that this awareness should shape our prayers, our messages, our driving, and the way we treat people. He encouraged us to read and understand the Qur'an, pray on time, try to pray in the masjid, wake for Fajr and suhur, and make sincere du'a. Even one day of disciplined prayer can become a longer habit. As Ramadan continues, we should ask Allah to accept our worship and help us carry its lessons through the next eleven months.
- Where could we notice Allah watching over our choices today?
- Which prayer or worship habit could we practice for one full day?
- How can we make our words more truthful and helpful?
