Follow the complete Quran and Sunnah
“The messengers gave us wisdom from Allah.”
Because no individual can master the entire body of religious knowledge, Muslims should sincerely follow the complete Qur'an and Sunnah through trustworthy inheritors of prophetic knowledge rather than selecting only what seems understandable or appealing.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Distinguishes the Qur'an from hadith and warns that Sahih al-Bukhari is not an exhaustive collection.
- Explains why prophets are needed to teach divine attributes, religious law, and knowledge inaccessible through reason alone.
- Presents scholars as inheritors of the prophets who preserve religious knowledge while others fulfill worldly responsibilities.
- Critiques rejecting scholarly authority and selectively following only personally understandable religious teachings.
- Defines legitimate authority through fidelity, sincerity, and love for Allah and His Messenger.
- Urges following the complete Qur'an and Sunnah through historically grounded teachers, and closes with prayer and sunnah prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“The messengers gave us wisdom from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“Authority comes from Allah and His Messenger, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.”
“But to sincerely, genuinely want to follow not Qur'an and sunnah, but the entirety of the Qur'an and sunnah.”
“The only thing that will satisfy a true believer are the true words of Allah and His Messenger that are accompanied by love for Allah and His Messenger.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb said that our minds can recognize there is one Creator, but prophets teach us how to know and worship Allah and how to live wisely. Because no one can master every area of religious knowledge, scholars and teachers help preserve and explain the Qur'an and Sunnah. He warned us not to choose only the teachings we find easy or appealing, but to seek sincere, historically grounded guidance and follow the Messenger fully. He closed by encouraging us to keep learning, pray our sunnas, and ask Allah for good in this life and the next.
- What is one religious question you think requires guidance beyond personal opinion?
- What would make a teacher trustworthy to you?
- Which sunnah could we practice together this week?
