Prepare your heart before Ramadan

“Sha'ban is the month to wake up the heart.”

The khateeb, at 23:28

In one sentence

Sha'ban is a preparation period in which Muslims should intentionally strengthen worship, repair community relationships, and begin reflective Quran engagement before Ramadan arrives.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Sha'ban is described as the time to water the seeds planted in Rajab, while remembering Ramadan and life are not guaranteed.
  2. Stories of repentance and the Prophet's public warning frame Ramadan preparation as an urgent journey rather than something to fear.
  3. The first relationship is with Allah: restore heart-presence, fast intentionally, and train the nafs by resisting its impulses.
  4. The second relationship is with the community: attend the masjid, serve others, forgive, and repair grudges before Ramadan.
  5. The third relationship is with the Quran: begin reading now and reflect through wording, context, personal experience, connections, and universal lessons.
  6. The khutbah ends with a call to start immediately through masjid attendance, Quran reading, and steady preparation for a transformative Ramadan.

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

Imam Vajid reminded us that preparing for Ramadan starts now, in Sha'ban, rather than on the first night of fasting. He encouraged us to ask Allah to let us reach Ramadan and to begin making an effort today. We can prepare by bringing our hearts into prayer and practicing choices that help us grow closer to Allah. He also asked us to serve our families and community, forgive mistakes, and avoid letting small disagreements divide us. With the Quran, we can start reading now, think about its meanings, and ask how its guidance applies to our lives.

  1. How could we help someone at home or at the masjid this week?
