Buildings alone cannot protect our future
“Our next 25 years must be about building institutions.”
After 25 years of grief, scrutiny, and growth since 9/11, American Muslims must prepare for the next 25 years by investing in knowledge-based institutions, engaging wider society, and serving neighbors beyond mosque walls.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Reflects on 9/11, American Muslim scrutiny, and the community’s difficult journey.
- Acknowledges Muslim institutional growth and religious freedoms in America.
- Uses Texas curriculum changes to argue that overseas concern must be balanced with local civic engagement.
- Warns that mosques and buildings alone cannot protect the next generation.
- Calls for investment in education, research, youth development, leadership, and inclusive scholarship.
- Urges Muslims to practice the Prophet’s Sunnah, engage neighbors, and serve all humanity.
- Closes by asking what lasting impact Muslim institutions leave on their communities and praying for youth and justice.
In the khateeb's words
“That question is not about the past. That question is not about how we survived the past 25 years. That question is about how are we going to survive the next 25 years.”
“We cannot isolate ourselves from the society in which we live. Buildings are not enough.”
“Our next 25 years must be about building institutions. Not only buildings. Institutions that produce the scholars, educators, researchers, professionals.”
“His Sunnah is how to deal with the neighbors. His Sunnah is how to deal with one another. His Sunnah is how to help each other.”
For the dinner table
Twenty-five years after 9/11, we should remember those who died and the pain their families still carry. The khutbah says American Muslims have faced fear and scrutiny, but have also built mosques, schools, programs, and a freer religious life. For the next 25 years, we should look inward as well as outward and pay attention to what happens in our own schools and communities. We need to invest in people, knowledge, youth, leaders, and institutions, not only buildings. By following the Prophet’s Sunnah with our neighbors and serving the wider society, our Muslim community can become a source of benefit and protection for future generations.
- What can our family do to be good neighbors this week?
- Which community institution or service would you like to help build?
- What helps young Muslims keep their faith while contributing to America?
