Resist Shaytan by relying on Allah
“We're in a constant battle because we have a persistent enemy.”
Believers must recognize Shaytan as a persistent enemy, rely on tawhid and Allah’s mercy in ease and hardship, and prepare for Ramadan by resisting temptation and seeking forgiveness and well-being.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Begins with testimony of faith and prophetic supplications for forgiveness, well-being, and protection.
- Introduces Shaytan as humanity’s persistent enemy who tries to corrupt good deeds.
- Explains Surah al-Isra 17:61, 70: Iblis’s pride, tactics, and limited authority over true believers.
- Applies the warning to temptations involving music, media, wealth, sexuality, and phone scrolling.
- Uses sea imagery to urge remembrance and gratitude to Allah in both hardship and ease.
- Closes by presenting tawhid as a shield and urging preparation for Ramadan.
In the khateeb's words
“The believers don't even worry. I got you. Allah is enough. Allah is sufficient.”
“Allah is Allah, worthy of worship when it's easy, when it's difficult. Great times, bad times.”
“We're in a constant battle because we have a persistent enemy.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that Shaytan is a persistent enemy who tries to draw us away from Allah, sometimes gradually through everyday choices. He warned that pride in our success and confidence that we can handle temptation can make us careless. Through the example of people calling on Allah during danger at sea, he encouraged us to remember Allah when life is easy as well as when it is hard. He also reminded us that Allah has given us what we need to resist temptation, and that certainty in Allah is our shield. As Ramadan approaches, we can prepare by turning to Allah and asking for forgiveness, protection, and well-being for ourselves and our families.
- What is one blessing you want to thank Allah for today?
- What could you say when friends invite you to do something you believe is wrong?
- What would you like to ask Allah for as we prepare for Ramadan?
