Repentance & taqwaFrom the masjid's own video, Sep 3, 2025.

Small sins can harden the heart

“The problem with sins that you belittle is that you don't even consider them to be sins.”

The khateeb, at 20:31

In one sentence

Belittling small sins desensitizes the heart and allows wrongdoing to accumulate, so believers should take every sin seriously, repent, learn about Allah, and regularly examine themselves.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. The Prophet's analogy of small twigs becoming a destructive fire illustrates how minor sins accumulate.
  2. Examples show how people rationalize dishonesty, gossip, property violations, and normalized community wrongdoing.
  3. Belittled sins can harden and cover the heart, weakening the effect of Quranic reminders.
  4. Every deed, including seemingly insignificant sins, will be recorded and encountered on Judgment Day.
  5. Believers are not expected to be sinless, but they must recognize wrongdoing, repent, and repair harm.
  6. Knowing Allah through the Quran and practicing self-accountability helps prevent desensitization to sin.

For the dinner table

Today's khutbah reminded us that small sins are not harmless just because they look small. Like twigs building a fire, repeated choices can grow into something that harms our hearts and makes reminders harder to receive. Allah does not expect perfection; He calls us to notice our wrongs, feel sorry, seek forgiveness, and repair harm when we have hurt someone. We can grow by learning about Allah through the Quran and checking our actions before we are called to account.

  2. When have you realized that something you dismissed actually needed an apology or correction?
  3. What is one way you could check your actions before going to sleep tonight?
