Taqwa turns obedience into protection

“Taqwa is going to be shown through our actions.”

The khateeb, at 13:20

In one sentence

The khutbah argues that taqwa is a protective awareness of Allah expressed through obedience, righteous action, contentment, gratitude, and preparation for the hereafter.

  2. Taqwa is defined as building a barrier against Allah’s punishment through obedience and avoiding prohibitions.
  3. Ali ibn Abi Talib’s framework presents taqwa as fear of Allah, revelation-guided action, contentment, and preparation for death.
  4. Taqwa must appear in worship, family relationships, neighborly conduct, and everyday behavior.
  5. Contentment grows by noticing those with less rather than comparing oneself with those who have more.
  6. Believers are urged to prepare for returning to Allah and continually gather taqwa as spiritual provision.

For the dinner table

Today’s khutbah taught that taqwa means keeping a protective awareness of Allah by obeying Him and avoiding what He forbids. It is not merely a feeling or claim; it should appear in how we pray, treat family and neighbors, and behave with everyone. We were reminded to be grateful by noticing blessings and not measuring our lives against people who have more. True richness is contentment of the heart, while taqwa also means preparing for the day we return to Allah. This week, our family can practice taqwa through one deliberate act of worship, one grateful thought, and one kind action.

  1. What is one blessing we sometimes overlook because we compare ourselves with others?
  2. What is one way we can show taqwa in how we treat someone this week?
  3. What does preparing to meet Allah look like in everyday life?
