Ramadan fasting can cleanse the soul
“Ramadan is the absolute golden opportunity to cleanse our souls.”
Ramadan is a God-given opportunity to purify the soul and strengthen believers against three enemies, jinn shaitan, human shaitan, and the inner self, through fasting, night prayer, remembrance, and refuge in Allah.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Human nature contains the capacity for both good and evil, and sincere intention opens the way to Allah’s guidance.
- Ramadan fasting should transform worshippers rather than remain a routine abstention from food and drink.
- Fasting purifies the soul by day, while qiyam and night worship nourish it spiritually.
- Believers face three enemies: shaitan al-jinn, shaitan al-ins, and the inner self.
- Seeking refuge in Allah, practicing dhikr, tasbih, and istighfar, and using Ramadan’s spiritual opportunity help resist these enemies.
- The second khutbah recites Quranic fasting passages and closes with prayers for forgiveness, accepted worship, and successful completion of Ramadan.
In the khateeb's words
“The believer has three real enemies that hinder him or her from staying on the right path”
“We can't defeat the shaitan except by the help of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala”
“Ramadan is the absolute golden opportunity to cleanse our souls We fast in the morning and we perform qiyam and ibadat at night”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that people can choose both good and evil, and Ramadan gives us a special chance to strengthen the good in us. Fasting is meant to be more than going hungry: it should purify our hearts during the day, while prayer at night brings us closer to Allah. The speaker describes three obstacles, evil whispers from jinn, harmful influence from people, and our own lower desires. We can respond by seeking Allah’s protection, remembering Him, asking forgiveness, fasting sincerely, and praying at night. The goal is to finish Ramadan changed, forgiven, and more ready to stay on the straight path.
- Which of the three enemies do you think is hardest to notice?
- What can help us remember Allah during a difficult moment?
- How can fasting change more than our eating habits?
