Worship Allah beyond blessings and trials

“I need to build a relationship with Him that's independent of the test and the trial.”

The khateeb, at 17:02

In one sentence

Worship Allah with certainty and submission that do not depend on blessings, understandable explanations for trials, or agreement with every command, because tests should draw believers closer rather than make them turn away.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Addresses the guilt many feel after Ramadan and asks whether they have fallen back or fallen on their face.
  2. Explains Quranic images of falling on one's face or heels as loss of clarity versus holding back after hardship.
  3. Shows how worship can become transactional when based only on receiving desired blessings.
  4. Urges believers to know Allah through His names and attributes and trust His wisdom beyond what they understand.
  5. Applies the same principle to accepting divine commands beyond what the ego can rationalize.
  6. Reframes severe trials through the example of Ayyub, presenting hardship as a possible means of drawing closer to Allah.

For the dinner table

Dr. Omar reminds us that many people struggle to keep up their worship after Ramadan or another special season. He asks us to build a relationship with Allah that remains steady through blessings, difficulties, and things we do not yet understand. Blessings can help us love Allah, but our love should reach beyond the gifts to the One who gives them. Learning Allah’s names and attributes can deepen that relationship and help us trust His wisdom. Trust does not mean we will never feel pain, and a difficult experience may become a way of drawing closer to Allah through du'a and devotion.

  1. What does a blessing you enjoyed today help you appreciate about Allah?
  2. When something is hard to understand, what could you ask Allah for in your du'a?
