How the soul grows toward peace
“The more you fulfill your desires, the more empty you feel.”
The khutbah argues that the soul develops through righteous surroundings, good deeds, restraint, and reflection, moving from desire-driven impulses toward a tranquil, Allah-connected self.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Uses the growth of a child’s body as an analogy for developing the soul.
- Defines the desire-driven soul and warns that unchecked appetite can override morality and worship.
- Explains the self-reproaching soul as a stage of recurring temptation, regret, and struggle.
- Describes divine insight as the ability to question desires and see that consumption cannot cure inner emptiness.
- Presents the tranquil soul as resilient through loss and hardship without losing hope or connection to Allah.
- Calls listeners to seek purification through righteous company, good deeds, avoiding sins, and asking Allah for help.
In the khateeb's words
“If it's not given its nourishment, if it's not protected from harms, it stays undeveloped, stays very weak.”
“the more you fulfill your desires, the more empty you feel. The more empty you feel.”
“if a person continues working on himself, constant good environment, constant good company, constant good deeds, constantly abstaining from sins, then the fourth level comes.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb explained that just as a baby grows through nourishment and protection, the soul also needs care. He described a journey from being ruled by desire, through regret and self-struggle, toward insight and finally a tranquil heart. Good surroundings, righteous company, good deeds, and avoiding sins help this growth. He encouraged us to reflect before following our wants and to ask Allah for purification. The goal is not to feel no pain, but to keep hope, patience, and trust in Allah when life is difficult.
- What desire is hardest for you to pause and think about before following?
- Who or what helps you make better choices?
- What does staying hopeful during a difficult moment look like?
