Repentance & taqwaFrom the masjid's own video, Sep 3, 2025.

Six barriers that block spiritual success

“I learn something, I have to put it into action.”

The khateeb, at 15:40

In one sentence

The khutbah teaches that success is blocked when religious knowledge is left unapplied, repentance is delayed, righteous company is merely a status symbol, worldly appetite dominates, and the approaching Akhirah is ignored; believers should act, repent, emulate the righteous, and prepare for death.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Frames spiritual success as threatened by several barriers, beginning with knowledge that is not acted upon.
  2. Warns against collecting lessons, degrees, and religious knowledge for display rather than practice.
  3. Urges immediate tawbah and warns against postponing repentance or the five daily prayers.
  4. Contrasts genuine righteous companionship with boasting about knowing scholars, urging emulation and mutual correction.
  5. Uses the dunya parable and the hadith of the valley of gold to expose endless worldly appetite.
  6. Reminds listeners that death and the Akhirah are approaching, then closes with prayers for guidance and forgiveness.

For the dinner table

The khutbah reminds us that knowing what is right is not enough; we must practice it. When we sin, we should repent immediately instead of waiting for a special time or future milestone. Good friends help us stay on the right path and lovingly correct us when we slip. Worldly success and possessions never fully satisfy the heart. Since death is certain and its timing is unknown, we should prepare by doing what Allah loves and what pleases Him.

  1. What is one good thing you know but need to practice more consistently?
  2. Who helps you stay close to Allah, and how do they help you?
  3. How can remembering death change the way we use today?
