Truth requires struggle and sacrifice
“The truth has to have a price and it has to be paid in order for the truth to have any value.”
Spiritual growth and authentic commitment to truth require self-struggle, sacrifice, and action, not merely wishes, intellectual agreement, or dua, while keeping worldly possessions in the hand rather than the heart.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Contrasts public remorse and conscience with costly truth-telling, invoking Tony Blair and Gaza.
- Cites a hadith about Hamza and speaking truth to tyrannical authority, urging Muslims to stand for truth.
- Explains self-struggle in Surah al-Ankabut as the path to divine guidance and stronger iman.
- Uses Surah Ali Imran and Ibrahim’s sacrifices to teach giving from what one loves and detaching from desires.
- Clarifies halal enjoyment versus being controlled by possessions, and explains dua as seeking Allah’s help while fulfilling one’s duties.
- Closes with prayers for guidance and protection for Muslims facing suffering in Palestine, Sudan, Afghanistan, and elsewhere.
In the khateeb's words
“the truth has to have a price and it has to be paid in order for the truth to have any value”
“the guidance can only come as a result of a struggle”
“it is a challenge when you have it in your hand to keep it actually out of your heart”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that faith grows through effort, sacrifice, and honest action, not wishes alone. We should give up some of what we love for Allah and keep money, time, and possessions under our control rather than letting them control us. Enjoying halal blessings is allowed, but our hearts should remain attached to the Hereafter. Dua is important, yet it should accompany the work Allah has asked us to do. The khutbah ends by asking Allah to guide us and protect Muslims facing suffering around the world.
- What is one good thing you can give your time or attention to this week?
- How can you tell whether something is serving you or controlling you?
- What work should you do alongside a dua you are making?
