Trust Allah when the path seems closed

“We become stronger in our connection to Allah.”

The khateeb, at 30:16

In one sentence

The story of Ashura and the parallel lives of Musa and Muhammad teach Muslims to respond to oppression and seemingly closed paths with steadfast trust in Allah, growing in faith through hardship.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Explains Ashura as a commemoration of Allah saving Musa and Bani Israel from Pharaoh.
  2. Describes the Prophet's encouragement to fast Ashura and optionally an adjoining day.
  3. Connects the lives of Musa and Muhammad through Qur'anic parallels and enduring miracles.
  4. Retells the Red Sea crisis and Musa's confidence in Allah despite apparent hopelessness.
  5. Compares Musa's rescue with the Prophet's escape from Mecca and the Hijrah.
  6. Applies the lesson to current crises: hardship is inevitable, but faith and connection to Allah should deepen.
Try this week
Fast the tenth of Muharram, Ashura; if possible, add the ninth or eleventh.
When hardship comes, strengthen iman, conviction, and connection to Allah rather than surrendering to despair.

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

The khateeb reminded us that Ashura remembers Allah saving Musa and his people from oppression, and that fasting on this day is strongly encouraged. He connected Musa's trust at the sea with Prophet Muhammad's reassurance to Abu Bakr that Allah was with them during their journey. Both stories invite us to turn to Allah when we feel frightened or cannot see a way forward. He also described the Qur'an as a lasting miracle that continues to guide people. Living with trust is harder than talking about it, but hardship can become a time to strengthen our faith and our connection to Allah.

  1. What stands out to you about Musa trusting Allah when the sea was ahead and the army was behind?
  2. How could you comfort a friend who feels scared, remembering the Prophet's reassurance to Abu Bakr?
  3. What could our family do this week to spend more thoughtful time with the Qur'an?
