Remembering Allah prepares the heart for hardship
“The believer should be able to move through the dunya without allowing the dunya to make him forget his Lord.”
Remembering Allah in everyday ease through gratitude, patience, and prayer trains the heart to turn to Him during hardship and remain responsive to others’ suffering.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with reminders about taqwa, truthfulness, Quranic guidance, and the Prophet’s example.
- Defines dhikr as a way of living, not merely words recited after prayer, and connects it to gratitude.
- Explains how remembrance, patience, and salah bring comfort and Allah’s support during difficulty.
- Addresses the suffering of the ummah, warning listeners not to become numb and urging dua and practical help.
- Teaches that small daily frustrations train the heart for larger tests, supported by a hadith about gratitude and patience.
- Concludes by emphasizing belonging to Allah, guarding salah, remembering Him in ease and hardship, and praying for the oppressed.
In the khateeb's words
“Being remembered by Allah is more beloved to us and more valuable than being remembered by anyone in this dunya.”
“But the believer should be able to move through the dunya without allowing the dunya to make him forget his Lord.”
“The heart has to be trained, and Allah gives us opportunities to train that heart every day.”
“Because we do not know what tests Allah has written for us. But we do know where He has told us to turn.”
For the dinner table
Chaplain Sulaiman reminded us that remembering Allah belongs in our whole day, including our choices, blessings, and worries. We show gratitude by saying alhamdulillah and using what Allah gives us in ways that please Him. When life is difficult, we can turn to Allah through patience and prayer, knowing that hardship does not mean He has abandoned us. Practicing gratitude and patience in small moments helps our hearts learn where to turn when bigger tests come. He also reminded us to keep caring about people who are suffering, make dua for them, and help wherever we can.
- What is one blessing you enjoyed today, and how could you use it to please Allah?
- When something does not go your way this week, how could you practice patience and remember Allah?
