Invest in people, not possessions
“Instead of buying more gadgets, buying more technology, buying the newest freshest thing out, invest in yourself.”
Communities gain honor and serve the ummah by investing time and effort in developing capable, respected people, especially youth, rather than relying on wealth, beginning with oneself, one’s children, and one’s community.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Umar ibn al-Khattab’s anecdote contrasts wealth with the value of developing exceptional people.
- The Prophet’s treatment of youth demonstrates respect, inclusion, confidence, and responsibility.
- Summer should combine recreation with intentional learning and personal development.
- Listeners are urged to invest in themselves through Quran, seerah, spiritual growth, and cross-disciplinary skills.
- Parents should invest time and experiences in their children while modeling lifelong growth.
- The community should offer skills and address needs such as counseling, social work, and youth guidance.
In the khateeb's words
“There's so much can happen in a year. And we waste that time over a lifetime. And not taking advantage of that.”
“He gave them that confidence. He made them feel. Like they were part of the ummah. And he made them feel big.”
“So instead of buying more gadgets. Buying more technology. Buying the newest freshest thing out. Invest in yourself.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that a strong community grows through the people we nurture and the time we invest in them. The khateeb encouraged children and adults to use the summer for learning and growth while still making room for play and fun. He described how the Prophet honored young people, respected their rights, and helped them feel included. He asked us to invest in ourselves, our children, and our community through useful skills, learning about our faith, and new experiences. As a family, we can each choose something to learn and find a way to use what we know to help others.
- What would you love to learn this summer alongside your favorite ways to play?
- When have you felt that adults really listened to you and valued your ideas?
- What is one skill our family could share to help someone in our community?
