Accept correction to keep growing

“Real growth actually happens when you're actually willing to accept the correction of someone else.”

The khateeb, at 13:38

In one sentence

Because everyone begins and ends dependent and remains imperfect throughout life, believers should keep learning, accept correction humbly, and care for parents and others so they continually grow in knowledge and taqwa.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Allah gives people hearing, sight, and understanding so they can learn and show gratitude.
  2. Human life moves from dependence in infancy to dependence in old age, creating duties toward parents and children.
  3. Youth is the prime period for seeking knowledge, growth, and character formation; age alone does not create wisdom.
  4. Prophetic examples show that accepting correction from Allah, parents, teachers, or community enables real growth.
  5. Advice should be offered wisely and privately, while recipients must resist arrogance and accept correction.
  6. Examples from Abu Mas'ud, Amr ibn Abi Salama, Umar, and Musa reinforce humility before closing prayers for suffering Muslims.

For the dinner table

We all begin life knowing nothing and depending on others, and many of us will again need care in old age. The khutbah reminds us to treat caring for parents as a blessing and to use our years of strength to learn, grow, and become wiser. Real growth means accepting correction with humility, whether it comes from parents, teachers, trusted community members, or Allah's guidance in the Qur'an. We should also correct others gently, privately, and kindly. This week, we can choose one area to improve and show patience and gratitude toward the people who care for us.

  1. What is one way we can thank or help an older family member this week?
  2. What kind of correction helps you improve instead of making you defensive?
  3. What is one small habit you want to change before next Friday?
