Turn suffering into courage and generosity
“I will do and I will give and I will show up whether the dunya is giving me permission to do so or not.”
Believers should use the Prophet's morning-and-evening supplication to seek protection from inner and worldly afflictions, then respond to suffering by showing up courageously and generously for themselves and their communities.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with praise, testimony of faith, and a Quranic reminder to remain mindful of Allah.
- Names Gaza, Sudan, and immigrant and refugee persecution as current sources of collective distress.
- Introduces the Prophet's encounter with Abu Umama and the morning-and-evening supplication for anxiety and debt.
- Explains the supplication's themes: anxiety and grief, helplessness and laziness, cowardice and stinginess, and debt and oppression.
- Applies the supplication to consistent mosque attendance, prayer, generosity, and resisting apathy toward suffering.
- Urges listeners to support Brother Moose's pardon and immigration paperwork, then closes with prayer and announcements.
In the khateeb's words
“This faith is built upon the idea of optimism. And so this grief of remorse is that grief we also want to get rid of.”
“The ascension of the believer is based upon the fact that I will do and I will give and I will show up whether the dunya is giving me permission to do so or not.”
“It will take 10 seconds for you to fill this letter out, we'll put it on the counter or somewhere over here for people to sign.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah taught us a du‘a for seeking Allah’s protection from anxiety, grief, helplessness, laziness, cowardice, stinginess, debt, and oppression. The khateeb explained that worry about the future and pain from the past can keep us from doing good in the present, while faith gives us hope and a way forward. He encouraged us to show up consistently in our communities so we can notice when someone is missing or struggling. He reminded us that generosity is not only for comfortable times and can include our money, time, du‘a, attention, and courage. Amid suffering in Gaza, Sudan, and immigrant communities, he called on believers to ask Allah for relief and to become a source of relief for others.
- When worry or regret makes you feel stuck, what could help you take one good step today?
- What can you generously share even when you do not have much money?
