Sabr helps believers endure hardship
“Always say everything's come from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala: I will handle it because it comes from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
In one sentence
Believers should meet loss and hardship with sabr by accepting Allah’s decree, allowing natural grief, rejecting ritual self-harm, and trusting Allah to provide sufficient strength.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- It introduces Imam Ali’s teaching that patience descends in proportion to the calamity.
- It urges believers not to assume they will be unable to endure future hardship, because Allah supplies matching patience.
- It distinguishes permissible crying and sadness from objecting to Allah’s decree or performing ritual bodily lamentation.
- It emphasizes that true sabr is heartfelt acceptance, illustrated through al-Ash'ath ibn Qays’s bereavement.
- It closes with a prayer to be counted among the patient and a recitation of Surah al-Ikhlas.
Try this week
During hardship, affirm that what comes from Allah can be endured and ask for the patience to meet it.
Allow yourself to cry and feel sad after loss without treating grief as rejection of Allah’s decree.
Refrain from striking the face or cutting hair as rituals of mourning.
