Knowledge only matters when it shapes character
“It is of no use to know something if one does not act upon it.”
Prophet Isa’s example teaches that knowledge, certainty, and religious practice matter only when they cultivate humble, righteous hearts that serve others and sustain families and communities.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with praise, taqwa, and the Quranic standard of honor.
- Uses Christmas conversations to introduce Isa as a major prophet honored in Islam and worth studying.
- Explains Isa’s spiritual mission as restoring inward religious meaning beyond dry ritual, control, and material status.
- Argues that knowledge becomes valuable through action and humility, not possession or pride.
- Uses teachings about certainty, clay and gold, and spiritual practices that cultivate yaqeen.
- Concludes that righteous hearts, not impressive buildings or resources, sustain families, mosques, and society, followed by prayers for afflicted communities.
In the khateeb's words
“it is of no use to know something if one does not act upon it. And in truth, an abundance of knowledge only increases one in pride if one does not act accordingly.”
“And the last thing is being in obedience, trying to be in a state of obedience to Allah.”
“righteous hearts are more beloved to god than these stones for Allah cultivates the earth with righteous hearts and in their absence the earth gets destroyed”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that Prophet Isa is an honored messenger in Islam whose example can teach us today. His message emphasizes that knowledge only becomes valuable when we act on it with humility and use it to benefit others. Wealth, status, and beautiful buildings can be useful, but righteous hearts are what truly sustain families, mosques, and communities. We can strengthen our spiritual certainty by listening to the Quran, reflecting on hadith, spending time in nature, and obeying Allah. The sermon also called us to remove envy, anger, greed, and hatred while growing in patience, mercy, gratitude, and compassion.
