Meet hardship with patience and trust
“If he's happy, then he thanks Allah, and thus there is good for him.”
Muslims should meet suffering and uncertainty with surrender to Allah, patience, gratitude, courageous action, and trust in divine wisdom.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Explains Pharaoh’s oppression and Musa’s mother’s sacrifice and trust in Allah.
- Connects her surrender to the meaning of Islam and belief in divine decree.
- Uses the hadith of Khabab to critique impatience and encourage resilience.
- Frames worldly hardship as a test requiring patience, faith, and hope in Allah’s help.
- Presents pain as a message that can redirect believers toward Allah for healing.
- Closes with the Serenity Prayer, prayers for Gaza and the suffering, and congregational prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“Sometimes Allah wants us In a moment of difficulty To step up In a different way To face our fears And to take action”
“We need to let the story play out To see the final chapter”
“If he's happy, then he thanks Allah, and thus there is good for him. But if he is harmed, and then he shows patience for this, thus there is good in it for him.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah told the story of Musa’s mother, who trusted Allah through the frightening experience of being separated from her baby before he was returned to her. The khateeb reminded us that we often want problems solved immediately, but we cannot see the whole story, especially what awaits in the Hereafter. Trusting Allah can give us courage to act as well as patience with what we cannot change. He encouraged us to thank Allah in happy times and turn to Him with patience during hardship. He also prayed for people suffering around the world and for those facing illness, loss, and financial difficulties close to home.
- What helps you do something good even when you feel nervous, like the courage discussed in Musa’s mother’s story?
- What can we thank Allah for today, even if today was hard?
