Allah can mend what seems broken
“O Allah mend us, O Allah guide us, and O Allah sustain us.”
In one sentence
Reflecting on Allah's name Al-Jabbar, which appears once in the Quran with two linked meanings, the Compeller whose power no one can resist, and the Mender who repairs what seems irreparably broken, should humble the arrogant and give the afflicted certainty that Allah can fix their affairs in unimaginable ways.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Opening recitation of Surah al-Furqan 63-77 (the servants of the Most Merciful) and the dua: forgive us, have mercy, mend us, guide us, sustain us
- Hadith of the 99 names (Bukhari/Muslim): whoever understands and lives by them enters paradise
- Al-Jabbar in Surah al-Hashr 59:23; first meaning: the Compeller whose force cannot be resisted
- Proofs of divine compulsion: the Titanic, the Challenger shuttle, al-Mansur humbled by a fly, the tyrant who abducted Ibrahim's wife killed by a mosquito, and the Day of Judgment hadiths against the arrogant
- Second meaning: the Mender, Arabic 'jabira' (bone cast), Allah repairs physically and emotionally: the amputated Palestinian boy, Ummu Salama's dua, Musa, Yusuf, the Prophet as orphan
- Arrogance is a heart disease: Umar's minbar self-reminder and Muhammad Ali's 'now I know who is the greatest'
- Closing with Ummu Salama's dua for calamity (inna lillahi... Allahumma ajurni fi musibati wakhlufni khairan minha)
Try this week
Recite the Prophetic dua between the two prostrations: O Allah forgive me, have mercy on me, mend/repair my affairs, guide me, sustain me
Humble yourself when success, wealth, or status tempts you to act like a compeller, remember who gave you all of it, as Umar reminded himself he was once a shepherd
When afflicted by any calamity, say 'inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un, Allahumma ajurni fi musibati wakhlufni khairan minha', in any language, and Allah will replace the loss with something better
Pay full attention during the khutbah and put away cell phones
