Resist Shaytan before small sins grow
“They have the ability to use their intellect to obey Allah and they also have the option to fulfill their base desires in the disobedience of Allah.”
Human beings must resist Shaytan and their lower desires through intellect, obedience, humility, and daily supplication because a person's final state matters more than their apparent spiritual standing.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Humans combine angelic capacity for obedience with animal desire, and mastering desire can elevate them above angels.
- Shaytan and the nafs are presented as humanity's two clear enemies, with the nafs ranging from uncontrolled desire to tranquil obedience.
- A person's final state can change dramatically, so no one should feel secure about their current standing.
- The story of Barsisa illustrates how Shaytan uses small, seemingly harmless steps to lead toward zina, murder, and disbelief.
- The khutbah closes by urging daily prayers for steadfastness and balance between fear of losing guidance and hope in Allah's mercy.
In the khateeb's words
“Allah created insan and He compounded the desires two ingredients within them so they have the ability to use their intellect to obey Allah and they also have the option to fulfill their base desires in the disobedience of Allah”
“Shaytan never comes to a person and tells him immediately commit shirk. Nobody would do such a thing.”
“Many a time, Bani Adam makes a mistake. The mistake is bad, Allah will forgive the mistake. But because of Bani Adam's own arrogance and stubbornness, he stays in that mistake.”
“And when you find this balance of living life in the fear that this guidance will be taken away and in the hope that Allah will keep you guided, it's like the two wings on a bird.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that people have desires like animals but also minds and the ability to choose obedience. Our two great enemies are Shaytan and the lower self, and temptation often begins with small steps that seem harmless. The story of Barsisa showed how protecting our reputation and refusing to admit a mistake can lead to worse choices. Because no one knows how they will end, we should stay humble and ask Allah every day to keep us guided. We should balance fear of losing guidance with hope in Allah's mercy.
- What is one small choice that can grow into a bigger problem, and what could help us stop early?
- How can we balance fear of doing wrong with hope that Allah will keep guiding us?
- What does it look like to admit a mistake before pride makes it worse?
