True wellness begins with a nourished soul

“The true pathway to real wellness is when our souls are fully nourished.”

The khateeb, at 34:29

In one sentence

Human beings are defined and ultimately sustained by their souls, so true wellness requires nourishing the soul through Allah, prayer, remembrance, righteous companionship, and service rather than relying on bodily or worldly provision alone.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Human beings consist of a body and a soul, with the soul giving life, dignity, and humanity.
  2. The body decays while the soul returns to Allah, so neglecting the soul produces anxiety, purposelessness, and inner emptiness.
  3. The soul is nourished by Allah through salah, dhikr, and sending blessings upon the Prophet.
  4. Spiritual connection can bring healing and resilience even when physical circumstances remain painful, as shown through examples of Ayyub, Gaza, and early Muslims.
  5. Righteous companionship, visiting the sick, serving the needy, and spending time in the masjid nourish the soul.
  6. Believers should care for the body as an amanah while prioritizing a healthy soul that returns content to Allah.

Shaykh Yasir Fahmy reminds us that Allah created us with both a body and a soul, and both need care. We can spend so much time on food, comfort, and possessions that we forget to nourish our connection with Allah. He encourages us to approach salah with our hearts, remember Allah, and spend time with people who help us grow closer to Him. Visiting the sick and helping people in need are also ways to nourish our souls. Our difficulties may not disappear immediately, but closeness to Allah can help us meet them with patience, gratitude, and greater peace. He closes by praying for healthy bodies and even healthier souls that return to Allah with His pleasure.
