Trust Allah through every trial
“They put in the work, but victory came when Allah had ordained it.”
In times of personal and communal trial, believers should guard Allah's boundaries, ask Him alone, actively work, and remain content with His decree, trusting that His help and ultimate victory are near.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The Battle of the Trench shows believers responding to overwhelming danger with increased faith and submission.
- Trials are a necessary test on the path to Paradise, including present anxieties about elections, conflict, employment, and family.
- The Prophet's advice to Ibn Abbas teaches believers to guard Allah's boundaries by fulfilling obligations and avoiding prohibited acts.
- Avoiding haram protects a person's spiritual state and affects the acceptance of supplication.
- Reliance on Allah must accompany practical effort, as demonstrated by the companions' work and sacrifice during the trench.
- Believers should accept Allah's apportionment while hoping for victory in this life or the next, including relief for Palestine and Gaza.
In the khateeb's words
“They protected Allah's boundary They asked Allah They sought help from Allah They put in the work But victory came When Allah had ordained it”
“Be pleased with what He has apportioned Be pleased in knowing that the victory is near And all it takes from us Place your complete trust and reliance in Allah”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that difficult times are not proof that Allah has abandoned us; trials are part of the path to Paradise. We should guard Allah's boundaries by fulfilling obligations and avoiding haram, because faith is shown in everyday choices. We should ask Allah alone while still working responsibly, as the companions dug the trench and endured hardship. We can be content with what Allah apportions while continuing lawful efforts for ourselves and people facing oppression. Whether relief comes in this life or the next, the believer trusts that Allah's help and ultimate victory are near.
- What is one boundary of Allah you want to protect more carefully this week?
- When have you had to trust Allah while still doing your part?
- What does being pleased with Allah's apportionment look like in daily life?
