Musa’s hardship can build strength and trust
“Struggles, hardships, calamities should not push us away from Allah.”
The story of Musa teaches that hardship should deepen reliance on Allah, motivate selfless service, and cultivate strength and trustworthiness.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Reviews the first four stages of Musa’s life and his escape from Pharaoh.
- Describes Musa helping two vulnerable sisters at the well in Madyan.
- Explains Musa’s supplication, gratitude, and reliance on Allah during hardship.
- Shows how Allah provided unexpected support through Shu’ayb’s family.
- Develops the qualities of being strong and trustworthy.
- Concludes with four takeaways: supplicate, help others, appreciate goodness, and build prophetic character.
In the khateeb's words
“he does good, even though he was in need. He just finished his travels, he himself was in need, but he goes to help others.”
“Struggles, hardships, calamities should not push us away from Allah . Rather, they should draw us nearer to Allah .”
“If a person has strength but does not have amanah, this can lead to problems.”
“So the key takeaways from this part of the story of Sayyidina Musa is number one, is when we are in a low place, we should always turn back to Allah .”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah followed Musa, peace be upon him, as he reached Madyan tired, alone, and without resources. Even then, he helped two sisters water their animals without expecting a reward, then turned to Allah and asked for whatever good He would send. The khateeb encouraged us to remember Allah’s past blessings during hard times and make Musa’s dua part of our daily routine. He also reminded us to appreciate kindness, return it when we can, and support people who are struggling. Through Musa’s example, we learned to develop both the ability to carry out our responsibilities and the trustworthiness to carry them out well.
- What is one way you could help someone this week without expecting a reward?
- Which blessing could you remember when you are having a hard day?
- How could you show someone that they can trust you with a responsibility?
