Trust Allah after making every effort
“I have nothing left except Allah.”
Because Allah is sufficient and never disappoints those who rely on Him, believers should pair diligent effort with sincere trust, night prayer, and surrender in every hardship.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Uses the Prophet's escape, Badr, and Ahzab to show reliance on Allah under seemingly impossible pressure.
- Argues that Allah's power is limitless and human hardship is never too great for Him.
- Reframes reaching the end of one's rope as an invitation to find Allah and trust Him.
- Urges listeners to work during the day and seek Allah in qiyam during the last third of the night.
- Closes by applying this reliance to hardship, responsibility, and letting go of control.
In the khateeb's words
“Say, I have nothing left except Allah. I have nothing left except Allah.”
“You will put your effort in during your waking hours in the day to get it. And then you will hand it over to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala at night when you get up for qiyam alayhi.”
“Yes, your job is important. I'm not telling you to give up your job, come sit in the masjid, make dua all day and expect paychecks to roll into your bank account.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that Allah is sufficient for believers and never abandons those who sincerely rely on Him. The khateeb recalled moments from the seerah when the Prophet and the believers faced frightening circumstances but responded with stronger faith. He encouraged anyone feeling overwhelmed to change the thought “I have nothing left” into “I have nothing left except Allah.” At the same time, trusting Allah does not mean giving up our responsibilities: we should work hard, make du‘a, and ask Allah for help, especially during qiyam. Whether life feels difficult or successful, our hearts should remain dependent on Allah rather than on our abilities, jobs, or circumstances alone.
- When have you felt calmer after asking Allah for help?
- What is one goal you can work toward while also making du‘a for it?
- How can our family help someone who feels like they are at the end of their rope?
