Every blessing and hardship tests faith
Every moment is a test of sincere faith, and believers pass by sacrificing what they love, forgiving others, and responding with patience or gratitude for Allah and the hereafter.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The eternal hereafter makes worldly life temporary and tests reveal sincere faith.
- Both comfort and hardship are tests, illustrated by Gaza's prioritization of Jumu'ah and the Prophet's warning about hardship.
- The Quranic command to spend from what one loves is illustrated through Abu Talha's garden.
- Suhaib al-Rumi and Abu Bakr demonstrate sacrificing wealth and comfort for Allah's command.
- Abu Bakr's forgiveness of Mistah shows sacrificing personal ego after the slander of Aisha.
- Every test calls for sabr or shukr, followed by an announcement encouraging dua, outreach, and attendance at the masjid fundraiser.
In the khateeb's words
“Good times are a test. Affluence is a test. Sitting in AC, mashallah, when we're able to pray Salatul Jum'ah in comfort, it's a test.”
“Or you allow me to fulfill the command of Allah. Allow me to make my hijrah and join the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. I'll give you all the wealth that I possess.”
“These were people that nothing material, nothing of this mundane world meant anything to them. As long as they could achieve their true objective which was in front of them.”
“Rather people of virtue should be such that they forgive and they overlook. Clean the slate. Bear the hardships that you have to bear from other people.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that this life is temporary and that every comfort and hardship is a test from Allah. He shared examples of companions who gave up gardens, wealth, safety, and pride because they valued the hereafter more than worldly possessions. Abu Bakr's response to the slander against Aisha teaches that forgiveness can require overcoming deep personal pain. We should meet each test with patience or gratitude and look for opportunities to give what we love. He also encouraged the community to make dua, spread the word, and support the masjid's building project.
- What is one blessing you can show gratitude for this week?
- What is something valuable, time, money, or a skill, you could share with someone else?
- When is forgiveness difficult, and what could help us choose it?
