Trust Allah, repent, and seek goodness
“Ask Allah for forgiveness in this life and in the hereafter, inshallah.”
In one sentence
Because people cannot know what is truly good for them, they should trust Allah’s wisdom, seek steadfast guidance, repent quickly, and ask for goodness rather than punishment.

Quotes
In the khateeb's words

“You doing the good is a blessing, so don't take it for granted. And if you do bad, repent as soon as possible, inshallah.”
“The answer, always repent. We are human, we make mistakes. Allah give us the avenue and the will to reverse that if we ask, if we repent, inshallah.”
“Do not ask for evil, for anything bad to behold you. Ask Allah for forgiveness in this life and in the hereafter, inshallah, and no punishment at all.”
Talk about it at home
For the dinner table
Allah may withhold something we want because He knows it would harm us or because He is protecting us. The Prophet taught us to ask Allah to keep our hearts firm, since faith and good actions are gifts that need His help. We should not envy someone who seems successful while persisting in sin, and we should respond to our own mistakes with quick repentance. Instead of asking for punishment, we should ask for forgiveness, wellbeing, and goodness in this life and the next.
- What is something disappointing that might later turn out to be protection?
- What can we say or do when we make a mistake?
- Why did the khateeb tell us not to ask Allah for punishment?
