Repentance & taqwaFrom the masjid's own video, May 2, 2026.

Choose Allah’s straight path every day

“The path is al-Islam, the curtains are the limits of Allah, and the open doors are the prohibitions of Allah.”

The khateeb, at 38:42

In one sentence

The khutbah argues that Muslims should consciously follow Allah’s one straight, well-established path through knowledge, remembrance, self-reflection, and obedience rather than choosing paths that lead away from Him.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Introduces taqwa and the Qur’anic command to follow Allah’s straight path.
  2. Explains sirat al-mustaqim as Allah’s clear, already-traveled path, modeled by Prophet Muhammad.
  3. Contrasts the single straight path with many other ways, distinguishing sirat from sabil.
  4. Connects following the path with intellect, knowledge, self-reflection, and developing taqwa.
  5. Emphasizes personal choice, humanity’s primordial covenant, and preparation through learning and practice.
  6. Closes with a prophetic parable portraying Islam as a protected path surrounded by prohibited openings.

For the dinner table

Today’s khutbah called us to stay on Allah’s straight path, the path shown through the Qur’an and the example of Prophet Muhammad. The speaker explained that following this path takes thought, remembrance, knowledge, and honest self-reflection, not just words. We face many possible directions, but our choices can either keep us close to Allah or pull us away. Seeking knowledge and practicing what we learn can help us grow in taqwa, or awareness of Allah. The closing image was of Islam as a clear path whose boundaries protect us from harmful side doors.

  1. What is one thing you could learn this week that would bring you closer to Allah?
  2. What choices help you stay on the straight path when you feel unsure?
  3. What might one of the “side doors” look like in everyday life?
