True success means steadfast character
“Sabr means that your pain should take you closer to Allah.”
The story of Prophet Yusuf teaches that true success is measured by steadfast character, especially taqwa in temptation and sabr in hardship, rather than changing worldly circumstances.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Quranic stories teach through examples, with Yusuf presented as one of the best stories.
- Yusuf’s changing circumstances reveal that success depends on character, principles, and connection with Allah.
- Taqwa means remembering Allah privately, resisting temptation, and keeping the Hereafter in view.
- Yusuf’s unjust imprisonment shows that making the right choice may bring temporary hardship.
- Sabr means taking pain to Allah, maintaining worship, avoiding haram, and refusing despair.
- Taqwa and sabr are lifelong qualities whose rewards are promised in this life and the Hereafter.
In the khateeb's words
“Success and failure is not measured by what you acquire or what you don't acquire by the end of your journey in this world.”
“It doesn't matter what others are going to see and think. It matters what Allah is going to think.”
“sabr does not mean that you don't feel pain. Sabr means that your pain should take you closer to Allah. You take your grief to Allah.”
“Trust the process and stay the course. And you will see in this very life as well, like Yusuf a.s. saw that ultimately he went from being the treasurer until he became the supreme ruler of Egypt.”
For the dinner table
Prophet Yusuf’s life teaches us that success is not only about what we gain, but about the kind of people we become while life changes around us. Taqwa means remembering that Allah sees us even when no one else does, and turning away from temptation for His sake. Sabr does not mean pretending we feel no pain; it means taking our grief to Allah, staying connected to prayer and Quran, and refusing to let hardship pull us toward haram or hopelessness. If we stay faithful through difficulty, Allah’s reward is never wasted, even when we cannot yet see the whole plan.
- When is it hardest to remember Allah is watching, and what could help you make a good choice?
- What can you do when you feel sad or stuck so your pain takes you closer to Allah?
- What could trusting Allah’s plan look like in one situation this week?
