Life's tests reveal where we turn
“Have I truly positioned myself as a grateful servant of God?”
Life's hardships and blessings are tests that reveal whether people remember their spiritual purpose, submit their desires to God, and keep returning to Him through prayer, trust, and evidence-based worship.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines life as a test of whether the soul recognizes God and regulates bodily desires by divine pleasure.
- Contrasts spiritual purpose with selfish pursuit of wealth, status, comfort, and consumerism.
- Explains that both adversity and blessing reveal what is inside and can return people to God.
- Applies trust and spiritual focus to divorce, loss, poverty, and other apparent disasters.
- Challenges cultural religious assumptions about a special 27 Rajab observance and urges Quran- and Sunnah-based worship.
- Uses the Prophet's losses, Ta'if, migration, Isra and Mi'raj, and Salah to conclude with prayer, perseverance, and self-examination.
In the khateeb's words
“He will provide for the pious in ways they would not have imagined.”
“No way. Nobody who understands this would miss one Salah ever.”
“Have I truly positioned myself as a grateful servant of God? Or am I just going through the motions?”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that our life is a test, and both difficult experiences and comfortable ones can show whether we remember Allah. We should not measure success only by wealth, status, comfort, or worldly outcomes, because Allah knows what truly benefits us. The Prophet's losses, rejection at Ta'if, and later relief show how patience, prayer, and trust can carry a believer through hardship. The five daily prayers keep us connected to our purpose and help us face life's tests. We should follow the Quran and Sunnah in worship, think carefully about customs, and ask whether we are living as grateful servants before we die.
- What is one hard thing that might teach you patience or bring you closer to Allah?
- How can Salah help you remember your bigger purpose on a busy day?
- What is the difference between a family custom and an act of worship?
