Resist desire and stay patient
“Resist your own hawa, your own desires, and be patient on things which are hard on you.”
Because Allah tests us through both hardship and ease, Muslims must cultivate gratitude, moral courage, self-restraint, and responsible stewardship rather than allowing technology and desire to erode the fitrah.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Sleep is a daily resurrection and a reason to begin with gratitude.
- Comfort and security are blessings that should awaken concern for people suffering in Gaza.
- Human beings can rise morally or fall into cruelty, deception, and cowardice.
- Muslims are entrusted to preserve faith and improve the earth, as illustrated by Omar ibn Saeed.
- Consumer culture, social media, and artificial intelligence can distract people and reshape their desires.
- The story of Talut and the river teaches restraint, patience, and resistance to instant gratification.
In the khateeb's words
“Resist your own hawa Your own desires And be patient On things which are hard on you”
“They are implanting Ideology Implanting ideology Distracting us Enslaving our minds And you don't need an army To invade And to control A nation”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminds us that waking up each morning is a gift from Allah and a small reminder of resurrection. It asks us to be grateful for safety, health, food, and comfort while remembering people in Gaza who lack these blessings. We are responsible for caring for the earth and protecting our moral nature. The speaker warns that consumer culture, social media, and technology can make us restless, selfish, and controlled by our desires. We can respond by practicing gratitude, using resources carefully, resisting harmful impulses, and teaching our children patience and moral courage.
- What is one blessing you noticed today that you usually take for granted?
- What is one desire or screen habit you could practice resisting this week?
- How can our family show care for people who are suffering?
