Stop rationalizing and start doing good
“I need to stop arguing and I need to start acting.”
The khutbah argues that believers must stop rationalizing around revelation, humble themselves before Allah, and intentionally turn faith into consistent good deeds that benefit others.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with Qur'anic calls to taqwa and a story of Ali, Fatima, and the Prophet's concern for night prayer.
- Uses Surah al-Kahf to frame human beings as argumentative and prone to rationalizing around revelation.
- Applies that warning to inherited religious habits, unresolved doubts, and post-Ramadan complacency.
- Urges listeners to add consistent acts of worship so their hearts become receptive to guidance.
- Broadens good deeds beyond ritual by calling listeners to plan them, use their abilities, and remove harm from society.
- Connects active service to communal suffering, then closes with prayers, salat, and community announcements.
In the khateeb's words
“At some point, a human being needs to tell themselves, I need to stop arguing and I need to start acting.”
“the expectation is you plan for good deeds and you go out of your comfort zone to perform the good deeds”
“every one of us has that you figure out what that is and you use that for the benefit of people around you”
For the dinner table
Today’s message was that faith cannot be reduced to arguments, inherited habits, or occasional worship. We need to humble ourselves before Allah, keep returning to the Qur’an, and turn belief into action. Good deeds include prayer and fasting, but also planning small acts of service, using our abilities, and removing harm from people’s lives. We should not leave Ramadan thinking we have done enough; every one of us still needs guidance, forgiveness, and light. The khutbah also asked us to care about suffering in places such as Gaza and to pray for relief and peace.
- What is one small good deed you could plan for this week?
- How could one of your talents help another person?
- What is one kind of harm you could help remove from someone’s life?
