Hardship can draw us closer to Allah

“Giving is not necessarily a blessing.”

The khateeb, at 14:18

In one sentence

Trials are not defined simply by what happens to us: Allah uses hardship and ease to expose character, draw believers toward Him, and teach them to balance self-accountability with trust in His decree.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. The deen engages the mind, body, and soul so believers process trials through reflection and action.
  2. Surah al-Ankabut presents testing as a means of exposing truthful and fraudulent character; hardship can also illuminate goodness.
  3. Giving and withholding may both be tests or blessings, while material abundance does not equal success or contentment.
  4. Believers should examine sin, oppression, and disobedience to parents as possible causes of hardship without falling into self-loathing.
  5. Divine decree and human responsibility coexist: evil occurs by Allah's will but may result from human wrongdoing.
  6. The suffering of Gaza illustrates how faith and meaning can emerge amid hardship, leading believers toward gratitude and nearness to Allah.

Redefine success around submission, basic needs, and contentment rather than accumulating more possessions.
Turn to Allah during trials and use hardship as an opportunity to strengthen faith and nearness to Him.
Reflect on circumstances and their outcomes instead of judging blessings and punishments only by appearances.

Today’s khutbah taught that tests are part of life and can reveal what is really in our hearts. Hardship is not always a sign that Allah is angry, just as wealth and ease are not always proof of His favor. We should honestly look at our own choices and then trust Allah when we cannot see the wisdom behind an event. Success is not having the most; it is worshipping Allah, having what we need, and being content. When life is hard, we can turn toward Allah and let the trial deepen our faith.

  1. When has something disappointing later taught you something important?
  2. What does being successful mean if it is not about having more?
  3. What can we do when we are worried but do not know why something happened?
