Righteous children begin with righteous parents
“When you put the righteous seed into righteous fertile earth, it will produce a righteous plant.”
Parents raise righteous children chiefly by becoming righteous examples themselves, choosing a faith-centered spouse, and intentionally investing time, education, and accountability in their children.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Taqwa and accountability before Allah frame the khutbah.
- The fertile-earth parable presents children as products of parental character and home atmosphere.
- Choosing a spouse for deen is presented as foundational to family stability and children's faith.
- Ibrahim, Hajar, and Ismail illustrate submission, long-term concern for children, and responsibility.
- The khutbah closes with early religious training, parental accountability, and investing time in children.
In the khateeb's words
“To be mindful that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is watchful over us. He created us, brought us into this life, sent to us prophets and messengers to guide us.”
“when you put the righteous seed into righteous fertile earth, it will produce a righteous plant. A righteous child.”
For the dinner table
Today the imam talked about how we raise our children and how faith grows in a family. He said children are like plants: they grow from the seed and the soil around them, so children learn mostly by watching what their parents do, not only from what they are told. He told the story of Hajar, who was left with baby Ismail in an empty desert valley. When she learned it was Allah's command, she said, 'If Allah told you to do this, He will take care of us.' He reminded us that the Prophet Ibrahim's first worry, even after Allah honored him, was 'What about my children?' He encouraged parents to be living examples by praying, reading Quran and coming to the masjid together, and to spend real time with their children. He also said nobody is born righteous. It is something each of us works for, and children who grow up righteous are the greatest blessing Allah can give a family.
- What is one good habit you've picked up from watching someone in our family?
- If you were Hajar alone in the desert, how do you think you would feel, and what helped her stay calm?
